Kbmill, yes, the roar was overwhelming. I just jumped up and down the whole song, crazy fun.
It's a difficult song to play if not rehearsed often, I hear.
This is the best of the 3 last live St Stephen.
If the band played NFA after, whole place would have blown sky high, no survivors, so step down a bit on Throwing Stones, but what a night, one of the best, top quality nights of the early mid eighties era.

The crowd reaction to St. Stephen is so visceral. I really wonder what brought it back and why it didn't last. Maybe it was just too 1968 for the boys...
A problem, by the way, that one encounters regularly reading these reviews. The tendency to treat the band as a museum piece, frozen in whatever time one happens to prefer ignores that 6 - 8 people were making the noise. Those people evolved, devolved and found differing fulfillment along the way. Likely, as Bobby always said, they forgot how to play that one, and when they remembered, it didn't fit who they were anymore.

I do, I think, oops I live in Massachusetts, so I hate Deadheads from southeastern Arkansas., One time I was there and I took a right turn at a darkstar and almost got beat up by a redneck. Massholes are wonderful people. I actually think shows in NY are good but oftenl ame, like the time some yahoo college students decided to take like eight rows of spaces in the Holmdel lot. I have met jerks in all states, cal Expo, NJ, in fact all Deadheads are assholes. This show is killer, should be released and mailed to me asap. Jason is coming to he fall 15 tour, not my friend Jason but the one from Friday the 13th. One time Jeff couldn't even get a paper from heads in sacramento, but that was in 78.

While this PCM recording sounds good, the Ficca recording is even better. More open, spacious sound. PCM's tend to sound compressed in the high end, to my ears.

Overall a great show. The audio is a little low but nothing an audio program can't fix. I love the Dead, and it is a bummer to see certain people on here making arrogant/snobby comments about certain section of the Dead's fans; you know who you are. If you don't like the East Coast heads then by all means don't come out here for shows. And I guess all the "johnny-come-latelys" should never have become fans because you own the scene right? Would you rather have them listen to the Dead or Aerosmith? Just a shame to see such negative/lame comments on such a great website...

I think the sound is as good as it for a few reasons great location and the height of the Mic's. other reason is it is still before all the bandwagon fans jumped on board with us. Therefore creating a nice respectful sound. Not east coast screaming and yelling. RESPECT

Wish we would all get together in some gigantic warehouse village and enjoy this particular release as a far-out laser show. This sounds freaking phenomenal rolling around the speakers.
Super super sound for this great show.

Excellent show in every facet. Great setlist and more than proficient musicianship led, of course, by Jerry. The reviewer below me (redeyedjim) is on point with the song analysis--would only add that the Stranger opener kicks ass!! Enjoy this puppy.

I simply love this show. The playing is outstanding, and Jerry and Brent (and honestly, the whole band) are just on fire the whole night. The first set has some real standouts -- Brown Eyed Women, Big RxR Blues (epic!), and especially Let it Grow - WOW. As nice a first set as one could hope for in 1983, IMHO.
The second set is even better: An foot-tappin', dance-happy China->Rider, a Playin' that spreads out into a jam that is simply AMAZING -- my favorite piece of Dead jamming form the 80', and of course the great, great Space->Spanish Jam->St. Stephen sequence.
Now THAT's a Dead show!
I've owned various copies of this show over the years, including a nice FOB, and I feel I know this show better than any other, because for a number of years it figured very, very heavily in my rotation. Without a doubt this is the best sounding version of this show I've ever heard. Much better than the SBD, and also much crisper than the FOB I had.

Thanks for cleaning this up and sharing it :-)
